According to loloi you have three main options for living rooms of various sizes.
Rug too small for room.
Eighteen inches is the most common space but in a smaller space you can get away with as little as eight inches.
Place the large rug within 12 inches of the walls on all sides or place it in the middle where it stops several inches away from all the furniture.
This 5 x 8 rug is too small for the dining room table because the chairs come off the rug.
A larger size is preferable.
It might be worth buying the higher end rug in a 5 8 and layering it over a much less expensive 8 10 neutral fiber rug.
The chairs do not need to be all the way on the rug either just a piece of it like the front two legs.
Ideally you should leave the same amount of floor space on all sides of your rug.
The rug must be larger than the smaller area rug by a minimum of one foot but more is better.
This way it doesn t look like the room is crowding the rug.
Use one large area rug to make a room look bigger instead of placing several small rugs.
A rug that is too large for the room can paradoxically make the room feel smaller.
The size of an area rug can dramatically alter the room s overall effect.
Almost any rug that feels just a bit too small can be stretched into service with a layer beneath that s at least a bit larger.
For some reason this doesn t look awkward or too small probably because the seating area already feels grounded and intimate because the room is smallish and the wall is helping ground everything.
It should be one or the other.
If your living room is smallish and your sofa is up against a wall then you can float a 6 9 rug in front of it.
A margin of wood or stone floor showing of about 1 2 feet is good.
This is maybe a 4 6 and it should be a 6 9 or an 8x1o.
Just get the largest size that will fit.
The main goal is to have the rug centered in the room.
The chairs come off this rug.
The right sized area rug will bring warmth and balance to the room creating the perfect finishing touch.
However if your room is small then you may have no choice but to use a smaller size.
Several rugs make a small room look crowded.

Layer the rug on top of a textural seagrass sisal or jute option.

If you use a cowhide.
I ve been meaning to do this with.
This works well with cowhide and smaller thinner.
For smaller living rooms you have two options.
A rug that is too small for your space can cause the room to feel uninviting.
You want the front legs of the sofa to be under the rug.
You can go with a smaller rug like a 5 by 8 that can float in the.
